Minister Of Defence Juwono Sudarsono met the butcher of Ugly Sam Donald Rumsfeld , whose official title is US Secretary Of Defense ,and made a statement that every Indonesian love to hear : “So, I was telling the secretary just recently, just two minutes ago," the minister went on, "that your powerful economy and your powerful military does [sic] lead to misperception and a sense of threat by many groups right across the world, not just in Indonesia."
And this is how the Secretary Of Defense defended his position: "I have never indicated to any country that they should do something that they were uncomfortable doing." Wimar Witoelar was right in saying that Rummy’s reply remind him of Robert Redford’s similar line directed to Demi Moore in his movie Indecent Proposal “I will never ask you to do anything you don’t want.” In bahasa, this is a kind of omongan gombal.
We all know how the Bush and its deputy Sheriff Australia’s Howard give constant pressure to Indonesia to wage the war on terror the way America did, that is by way of illegal indiscriminate detention of terror suspects. This time US hit the concrete wall and like it or not, must take the blow from his Indonesia’s counter part. Responding to a reporter's question about the US pressure for Indonesia to accept PSI or Proliferation Security Initiative, a multilateral pact that lets U.S. and allied inspectors search cargo ships for nuclear and other sensitive materials, Sudarsono said, "Perhaps we can agree on a limited framework of cooperation on an ad-hoc basis rather than a multilateral permanent structure." That is the diplomatic way of saying something like this : “Forget a permanent deal—we'll help you when it suits us".
